Seven years later, the sadness lingers across New York City and the nation. Thousands will gather at the World Trade Center site to remember the lives lost on New York's darkest day, September 11, 2001.
Four moments of silence will be observed.
The first will be at 8:46 a.m. the exact moment the North Tower was struck. At that time, bells will toll in houses of worship across the city.
Then the somber reading of the names begins. Relatives and students representing countries that lost lives in the attacks will be given that honor.
Families will then descend the ramp to the lowest level of the trade center site, where they will lay flowers before returning to street level.
The reading of the names will pause for three more moments of silence.
9:03 when the South Tower was struck.
9:59 when the South Tower fell.
10:29 when the North Tower fell.
