Obama, McCain To Join 9/11 Remembrance
Both Presidential Candidates Plan To Pay Silent Respects At Ground Zero; To Attend NYC Forum On Public Service
NEW YORK (CBS/AP) ―
The spotlight of a presidential campaign and a new memorial at the Pentagon join the rituals of remembrance on this seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
In New York, moments of silence are planned to mark the times that two hijacked jetliners crashed into the World Trade Center, along with the moments that the towers collapsed.
Services are also to be held in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon, where the memorial will be dedicated.
Presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama plan to pay silent respects at ground zero this afternoon and later attend a New York City forum on public service.
Family members and students representing more than 90 countries that lost victims on Sept. 11 were to read names of more than 2,700 people killed in New York.
Memorials are years away from being built in Pennsylvania and New York.
