The long-delayed, over-budget rebuilding of ground zero may be one of New York City's few reliable sources of construction jobs and revenue over the next several years.
That's according to a study by the World Trade Center site's owners. It projects over 26,000 new jobs and $3.7 billion will be created from construction at the site through 2016.
Building officials had predicted thousands of construction job losses this year even before the economic meltdown cut funding for several high-profile city projects.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey based its study only on the projects it is building on the site. Those include an office tower, a Sept. 11 memorial and a multibillion-dollar transit hub.
