N.J. Assembly Passes $32.8 Billion Budget
TRENTON (AP) ―
The state Assembly has approved a cost-slashing $32.8 billion budget. It voted 45-34 Monday to approve a budget that would cut money for hospitals, municipalities, colleges, property tax rebates and nursing homes.
It would also deny a funding boost for nonprofits that care for disabled -- and extend a utility tax.
The Senate was expected to consider the budget later Monday.
Gov. Jon S. Corzine and his fellow Democrats who control the Legislature conceded the cuts would be painful but needed amid fiscal woes.
Lawmakers will also decide Monday whether to borrow $3.9 billion for school construction and to cut taxpayer-paid benefits for government workers and teachers.
