A disgraced former NYPD officer is in police custody for a deadly shooting that took the life of his girlfriend.
Neighbors on 70th Street in Bensonhurst say they are heartbroken after hearing the news that 28-year-old Catherine Donofrio had allegedly been killed by her live-in boyfriend, ex-officer Jerry Bowens.
The 43-year-old was taken into custody without incident early Monday morning while driving his car a block from the 120th Precinct in Staten Island. Eleven hours earlier, police say he allegedly gunned down his girlfriend at her friend's condo in Greenpoint. That friend, Melissa Simmons, suffered minor wounds in the attack.
Neighbors say Donofrio and Bowens lived in a second floor apartment for more than a year and that there were no signs of problems.
Donofrio's parents and 99-year-old grandmother lived in two other apartments on the first floor of the building.
"I don't have a clue. It is shocking to hear it happened. I can't fathom why," said neighbor Rose Amaya. "I don't have a clue."
Bowens, a 13-year NYPD veteran, resigned last year after he was indicted for allegedly stealing crack from drug dealers to give to informants. He was reportedly cooperating with prosecutors while awaiting sentencing in that case.
