Bullets flew in a very packed area of Harlem on Monday night. At least seven people were injured, including one critically, during the gunfire, police said.
The incident occurred along six blocks on Lenox Avenue in the evening Monday as residents returned to the city following the long Memorial Day weekend. The shootings took place from 126th Street to 131st Street.
The streets were cordoned off by the NYPD and ambulances flooded the area. Dozens of police officers were on site and helicopters were seen hovering overhead.
Witnesses told CBS 2 HD the victims appeared to be teenagers and were possibly part of a retaliation shooting. The gunman is believed to be still at large. Witnesses told CBS 2 HD a man may have been bothered or jumped by a group of men, and then went home to get a weapon and came back firing. Police did not confirm witness accounts.
The incident caused major traffic delays in Harlem as 125th Street was shut down between Fifth and Eighth avenues while police continued their investigation.
Residents were told to avoid the chaotic scene and return home.
