A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is making for slick driving conditions from Buffalo to New York City's northern suburbs and forcing scores of schools to cancel classes or delay opening.
The National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning for Sussex, Warren, Morris, Somerset and Hunterdon counties in New Jersey and northern Westchester, Orange, Putnam and Rockland counties in New York from now until at least midday Wednesday.
According to CBS 2 HD's John Elliot as much as half an inch of ice is possible in points north and west of New York City heading into Wednesday morning.
This will make for treacherous driving conditions and could do a number on power lines and trees. Expect numerous school closings and delays on Wednesday morning.
In the city, the precipitation from earlier Tuesday mixed with and changed to sleet by late in the evening. Then the real mess began, with a change to freezing rain and sleet overnight. Wednesday morning the temperatures were hovering just above the freezing point, making the precipitation fall as steady rain.
"The true hazards will be for Wednesday morning commuters, as the precipitation that fell starting Tuesday evening will freeze over during the early morning hours," said CBS 2 HD's John Elliot.
The precipitation that turns into rain in the city by morning will persist, even turning heavy at times. The precipitation will stay as rain for Long Island and most of New Jersey, but it's the parts inland and north of New York City that will deal with treacherous icy conditions.
Total snow and sleet accumulation of up to an inch is expected in the city Tuesday night, followed by up to one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation.
A Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect for the city. That means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.
"If you have to be on the roads late this evening or even worse, Wednesday morning, please be careful. Take extra time to get to your destination," advised Elliot.
Here is the detailed CBS 2 HD Weather Center's 48-Hour forecast, according to Meteorologist John Elliot and Weather Producer Justin Lewis:
Wednesday: Low pressure will continue to push north and draw in warmer air. Expect cloudy skies, rain through the day (freezing rain north and west), breezy conditions and slightly milder temperatures.
