On Wednesday night bright lights and FBI agents were all over the usually desolate grounds of a Farmingdale industrial park. They spent the day digging, raking and sifting, expecting to solve one of New York's biggest mob mysteries.
FBI sources told CBS 2 HD they're looking for the remains of "Wild Bill" Cutolo, also known as "Billy Fingers," the Colombo crime family underboss who disappeared without a trace nine years ago.
"Lunchtime walking by we saw hundreds of FBI agents with their guns we knew something was up," passerby Phil Fried told CBS 2 HD.
Agents swarmed two sections of the industrial area, one just outside the brick building that houses a flooring company and the other in a wooded area.
"On the weekends kids come here and quad and dirt bike and stuff but there's nothing back there so, well, there might be some mob hit remains. It's very interesting I can tell you that," Holbrook resident Mike Marrazzo said.
FBI sources tell CBS 2 HD that while Cutolo is the main focus of the search, his body may not be the only one they find out here. This could be the place where more than one victim of mob revenge wound up.
There was no comment from anyone in Cutolo's family, several of whom are believed to be in the Witness Protection Program. Not known is exactly what lured the FBI to Farmingdale to start digging for bones -- and for the truth about the shady fate of "Wild Bill" Cutolo.
