The 10-hour long standoff involving the NYPD and an armed 'emotionally disturbed' man has ended peacefully, CBS 2 HD has learned.
Sometime after 7 a.m. on Friday morning, the lone gunman who barricaded himself in his home at 2504 Humphrey Street in East Elmhurst turned himself over to authorities.
The suspect allegedly walked out a door with his hands up, saying he was hungry and upset about his mother's recent death.
According to police, a 911 call was made of a man ranting and raving out of his home sometime after 10 p.m. Thursday night, and nearly eight hours later the situation was still ongoing.
When first responders arrived, the man fired several shots in the general vicinity of officers around 11:45 p.m. One bullet kicked up off the ground and debris struck the ankle of one of the cops.
When police first responded to the scene, they managed to get the man's family out unharmed.
The injured police officer stayed on the scene to help manage the situation. His injury is said to be minor. No other injuries were reported.
