Health Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden and New York City Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein announced on Tuesday that the City Health Department has recommended closing five more schools -- one in Queens, one in Manhattan, two in Brooklyn and one in the Bronx -- after documenting an unusually high amount of influenza-like illness over a number of days.
The five schools will be closed as of Wednesday, May 27. All schools will reopen on Monday, June 1.
The five schools are:
* Q811 (42 students) at 822, a small building in St. Albans for students with disabilities. Only closing Q811 at 822, not at other locations. A total of six students were documented with influenza-like illness during the last school day and Tuesday.
* P.S. 128 (Audubon School, 786 students) in Washington Heights. A total of 10 students were documented with influenza-like illness Tuesday and a total of 30 since last week.
* 231K (123 students), a school for students with disabilities at P.S./I.S. 180, a general education school in Bensonhurst. Only closing the special education part of the building, not the entire P.S./I.S. 180 building. A total of five students were documented with influenza-like illness during the last school day and Tuesday.
* P.S. 68 (791 students) in Wakefield. A total of 12 students were documented with influenza-like illness Tuesday and a total of 40 since last week.
* 369K (150 students), a school for students with disabilities at 369 Coy L. Cox School in Boerum Hill. Only closing the special education part of the building, not the entire building. A total of seven students were documented with influenza-like illness during the last school day and Tuesday.
