Tuberculosis Scare Hits Brooklyn School
Student Contracted Disease Last Week; Department Of Health And Mental Hygiene Following Protocols
BROOKLYN (CBS) ―
CBS 2 HD has learned of a health scare in Brooklyn on Tuesday after a student contracted tuberculosis.
The scare at PS 25 and IS 534 in Bedford Stuyvesant has parents concerned about the air-born disease. One parent spoke to CBS 2 HD and her main concern was over what will happen next.
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said it has the situation under control and released a statement which read:
"Early in June a student contracted tuberculosis. The school then notified the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene which held a meeting with parents on June 11."
This week the Department of Health is arranging for classmates with parental consent to get tested. The student is being kept at home while further protocol is being followed, but for some the steps taken so far have simply not been enough.
"It's scary. I can't even send my daughter to school from this point on because I'm just scared that it can infect my whole family," mother Tawanda Murray told CBS 2 HD. "It's scary. They're just telling us. That's terrible, real terrible."
