The latest casualty of the economic crisis is service at LaGuardia Airport, with American Airlines chopping dozens of flights off its schedule.
The nation's largest air carrier, American Airlines, has cut its flights across the country by 11 to 12 percent compared to last year. At LaGuardia Airport, five daily departures are being eliminated as well as 37 of its Eagle Flights.
American blames the skyrocketing cost of oil for its cutbacks. Last week, it began implementing a $15 charge for passengers' first checked-in bag to help the airline with its fuel bill.
In regard to the cuts, Gov. Paterson asked American to "take into account more than profit and when they evaluate routes. For many, these airlines are a critical lifeline to family and business obligations."
But American is not alone - Continental Airlines is cutting its flights across the country and at Newark Liberty International, by 3.2 percent by the end of this summer.
