New Yorkers See Hope As Obama Makes History

On the Road at the Conventions Blog

NEW YORK (CBS) ― There is something special about Thursday for New Yorkers like Althea Gathers.

"A lot of people died for us to get to where we are today," she said.

On this day steeped in history, Gathers will watch as Sen. Barack Obama makes history.

"Forty-five-years ago it was unheard of. You would never even think that you would get to this point. So the point that he's getting to proves that changes are coming - and that there is hope," Gathers told CBS 2 HD.

We've come a long way since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I have a dream speech." The same can be said for Harlem. CBS 2 HD spoke with several people - from several different backgrounds, and all of them marveled at the significance of this day.

"I didn't think I'd see it during my time, but I knew it was coming," said Ruper Finch.

"I feel good with him because maybe he [can] transform the country," added Abraham Floremo.

"I didn't think it would come this soon. I thought it would come. I'm really glad it's here now. It's really inspiring," said Kate Sapadin.

Inspiring to witness someone who looks like Obama - regardless of political affiliation - take another step forward on this historic political journey.
