Democratic Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama is known to be
quite an avid basketball player, but even he couldn't have imagined a
lead like this. According to the Wall Street Journal, Obama's campaign has
broadcast 9,785 television commercials in Florida. Senator John McCain has run zero in the state.
You
read that correctly, 9,785 for Obama, 0 for McCain in the Sunshine State. The Journal
reported Obama has spent more than $35 million on television ads across the
country, compared to Senator McCain's $32 million for television.
Obama's
ad purchases totaling $6.5 million in Florida are still well
behind what outgoing President Bush spent in the state. By this time of
the year in 2004, Bush had spent over $12 million in the state.
Poll
numbers show McCain and Obama are in a statistical dead heat in
Florida. McCain currently has 47% in a poll of polls to Obama's 45.8%,
according to the website RealClearPolitics. That 1.2% is well within
the margin of error for the polling.
Both candidates will
receive some airplay on stations carrying the Summer Olympics, as both
purchased advertising time during the broadcasts, but on a national,
not state level.
By the end of June, Senator Obama had raised
around $340 million for his campaign. However, he opted out of public
financing and will need to continue to pull in large donations for his
push to November.
On the other hand, Senator McCain will
receive an influx of over $80 million after he accepts his nomination
because he opted into public financing for his campaign. But, he will
face limits on how he can spend the money as dictated by campaign
finance laws.
