 About The Candidates & Issues

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (CBS) ― With the primary election just six weeks away, Hillary Clinton is way out in front here in Pennsylvania, according to a poll for CBS station KDKA-TV Newspoll conducted by Survey USA released this morning.

This is the first statewide poll in Pennsylvania since the Ohio Primary.

If the Pennsylvania primary were held today, the poll says 55-percent of likely Democratic voters would vote for Clinton, with 36-percent voting for Obama.

The margin of error is plus or minus four percent.

Support for the candidates is about even among men, with 47-percent saying they would vote for Clinton and 42-percent for Obama.

But when it comes to women, Clinton is the hands down winner, with 62-percent support versus 32-percent for Obama.

White voters support Clinton more heavily than Obama, 61-percent to 29-percent, but black voters are clearly in Obama's corner with 76-percent supporting him versus 22-percent for Clinton.

Clinton holds a 2 to 1 lead in Southwestern Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh.

She leads by 12 among those under age 50, leads by 26 among those age 50+.

On the economy, which is most important to Democratic voters in Pennsylvania, Clinton leads by 24 points.

On health care, which is the next most important issue, Clinton leads by 32 points.

Among voters focused on Iraq, the two are effectively tied.

The poll consisted of 1,650 Pennsylvania adults.
