Parkchester Fire Leaves Dozens Homeless

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Three children are among those injured in a four-alarm fire at a Bronx apartment building.

Residents of 1988 Newbold Avenue say panic spread just as fast as the fire that left dozens homeless.

"There was a gentleman running down the street yelling fire and [telling] everybody to get out," said Lorraine Walton. "I heard the blast - the windows when they blew out. I was already in bed."

The fire was reported at 1:20 a.m. Thursday, for what eventually grew into a four-alarm fire. The top floor of the six-story apartment building in Parkchester was totally engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Fire officials say three teens were rescued from the apartment where the blaze started.

"We came pretty close to losing the whole building," said FDNY Chief Peter Leicht.
