Tanker Fire Shuts Down I-95 In Conn.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) ―
Connecticut authorities say they are closing Interstate 95 in both directions for about two hours to clean up the site of a tanker truck fire in Fairfield.
Fairfield police Sgt. Jim Perez tells the Connecticut Post that the fire and the highway closure are making Monday morning's commute in southwestern Connecticut "difficult to impossible." No injuries are reported.
Police say the truck was carrying methanol and traveling in the northbound lanes in Westport shortly before 4:30 a.m. when the driver noticed smoke coming from the trailer. He stopped in Fairfield. Early indications are that faulty brakes were the cause.
The southbound lanes were closed but reopened a short time later. But officials planned to close both sides of the highway at about 7:45 a.m.
