There's community outrage in the Bronx after two shootings just blocks away from each other left one person dead and four injured, including a teenaged girl on her way home from school.
15-year-old Vada Vasquez and a friend were walking home from Bronx Latin School at 3:45 Monday afternoon, when police say a dispute erupted among a group of men from the Davidson Houses.
A 19-year-old man ran down the block, according to police, to escape a bicycle-riding gunman who opened fire, hitting him in the shoulder. But a stray bullet did much more serious damage to Vasquez, hitting her in the head.
Police say the shooter got away, while the teenaged girl is in a medically-induced coma fighting for her life .
Five hours later, also on Prospect Avenue about 20 blocks away, police say three people were shot, one of them fatally. Two of the victims are still hospitalized, while police look for a gunman and a motive.
Community activist Tony Herbert says he is outraged by the two acts of senseless violence within the last twelve hours in the Bronx, saying "this madness is getting out of hand and if we don't come up with a plan now, we are on the verge of seeing young Black and Hispanic children become extinct."
