CBS 2 Poll: Christie, Corzine, Or Daggett?

Corzine, Christie Make Final Push; Independent Daggett Eyes Upset

TRENTON (CBS) ― It's Election Day, and headlining the top races is the battle for New Jersey governor.

Three candidates, Governor Jon Corzine, Republican Chris Christie and Independent Chris Daggett have waged a long and sometimes nasty fight for the top spot.

Now, the top two contenders must wait for the public to break the tie, or make the third man a spoiler.

New Jersey elections are notoriously unpredictable. It's a safe bet then to say that Daggett has yet to be written off by Corzine or Christie.

CBS 2 spoke to voters Tuesday morning who say there's something else complicating their decision between Daggett, Christie, and Corzine.

"There's been a lot of sniping. But hopefully after this election it'll be all business," said voter Sarah Dahan.

Through it all, most voters think what matters is how each candidate intends to tackle the Garden State's toughest issues.

"Property taxes is the most important isse for sure. That's what's on everybody's mind," said voter Alex Johnston.

For Corzine, who's locked in a statistical dead heat with Christie, the stakes are high. But observers say a Corzine victory would certainly help validate President Barack Obama's agenda.

"Our president was here three times over the course of the campaign. And I think he made it very clear to the public the challenges that we face in the state of New Jersey, they aren't unique here," said Corzine.

Christie, who voted Tuesday morning in Morris County, says after 12 years without a Republican in office, New Jersey residents are ready for a change.

"There's a great level of discontent about the governor and how he's failed the people of this state, and his performance. Second, I think our message is getting through," said Christie.

Both Corzine and Christie have packed schedules Tuesday, as they criss-cross the state, trying to lock down those undecided votes. The polls close at 8 p.m.

Voters also will choose 80 members of the state Assembly, two state senators and mayors of cities including Camden, Atlantic City and Hoboken.

Also on the ballot is a $400 million open space referendum.

The polls are open until 8 p.m.
