Livery Cab Driver Shot By Passenger In The Bronx

46-Year-Old Ndiaye Amadau Fatally Shot In The Chest By Passenger

BRONX (CBS) ― A livery cab driver was shot and killed in the Bronx early Monday morning.

Police said 46-year-old Ndiaye Amadau was shot once in the chest just after 12:30 a.m. Monday by his passenger at the intersection of Wilson Avenue and Boston Road in Baychester.

Police believe the passenger shot Amadau in an attempted robbery. The cab then bounced off a parked car and slammed into a silver car waiting for the light to change.

The gunman then jumped out, according to police, and ran away, but the driver of the silver car was able to get a good look at the fleeing passenger.

There are close to 45,000 livery cabs in the city, but the one driven by Amadau did not appear to have a partition or a security camera.

"We don't know if the perp ripped out the camera, but we do know there was no partition in the vehicle and that's a problem," said Fernando Mateos, President of the NYS Federation of Taxi Drivers.

Mateos also said it's particularly difficult to piece together what happened since there were no decals showing who the driver worked for.

As other livery cab drivers gathered at the scene of the shooting, they talked about Amadau, who had been driving cabs for more than 15 years to support his wife and children back in Senegal.

"He's a nice guy," said Elhadji Miang. "He was a tall guy. Spoke good english."

At the cab company where Amadau used to work, one of his close friends took CBS 2 HD's Magee Hickey for a ride, and showed the veteran reporter how the security cameras work inside.

A quick picture when the passenger enters, according to one unidentified driver, is not enough protection.

"If you die now, how will they find you. It's too late, you die already."

It's the first killing of a livery cab driver in 2009, according to the federation's spokesman.
