Serb Student Wanted For Assault Won't Return To US

Lawyer Says Miladin Kovacevic Will Not Face Trial On American Soil

NEW YORK (AP) ― The lawyer of a Serbian student wanted in the United States on assault charges says his client will not return to America to face trial.

Lawyer Veselin Cerovic says 20-year-old Miladin Kovacevic thinks he would not get a fair trial in the United States and wants to be tried at home instead.

Police say Kovacevic severely beat up fellow Binghamton University student Bryan Steinhauer in a bar fight in May and fled to Serbia in June.

The injuries left Steinhauer in a coma.

Washington reportedly has demanded that Serbia return Kovacevic by Aug. 1. Serbian laws do not allow extradition.

Cerovic said Thursday that Kovacevic "will not voluntarily return to the United States."
