Rescue crews continued their search Tuesday for a young man who went missing while swimming off New York City's Rockaways.
Sabrina Hicks was with 21-year old Anthony Bolden Monday night when he disappeared into the ocean at Riis Park while trying to save his best friend Jacob Reid.
"He went to save his best friend, and then he didn't come back," said Bolden's friend Sabrina Hicks.
Reid and Bolden's mother held vigil on the shore with the family, praying for a miracle as NYPD harbor units and the US Coast Guard searched for Bolden's body.
"Everybody has their calling but I pray he comes home," said Bolden's brother Joshua Lewis.
"He might be out of the water," hoped Shelia Bolden, the swimmer's mother.
Anthony Bolden and his friends were at the beach just before 8 p.m. Monday when they ventured into the water. The life guards were already off-duty. Their shift ended at 6 p.m.
Jacob Reid, 20, said he was struggling to break away from the grip of a rip tide and Bolden went after him.
Reid said he harbors guilt that he made it back to shore, and his best friend since 5th grade lost his life trying to save his.
"He could swim. We all can swim that's why we were out there. And then it started getting stronger and stronger and we came back. He was trying to come back and it just caught him," Hicks said.
A portion of the beach was closed as divers continued their search Tuesday afternoon, but people still ventured into the water, saying search crews were sadly a familiar summer sight.
The incident came after a teenager drowned in a riptide off Beach 25 Street in the Rockaways on Saturday.
