Relief may be on the way for a neighborhood stricken with fear. The New York Times is reporting police were questioning a person of interest Monday night in connection with 14 sex attacks on the streets of southeastern Queens.
Over the last ten months, women in southeastern Queens have been forced to live in fear, worried they would fall victim to one of two suspected serial rapists.
"I've been very careful and cautious and not really going out by myself," said Queens resident Madeline Irizarry.
But Monday night, detectives zeroed in on their first solid lead, a woman who called police and tipped off detectives to a potential suspect.
Police brought him in for questioning but have so far backed off from officially labeling him a suspect.
Detectives say one of the suspects - responsible for eight attacks - is in his 20s, speaks with a Caribbean accent and has what appears to be the letter "d" tattooed on his right wrist.
The second suspect, also said to be in his 20s, has attacked 6 women as they waited near bus stops in the area.
"Look how small I am. God forbid they try to get me. Next thing you know - I'll be in the street somewhere. So please catch this man. Please catch him," said Kenyetta Agar of Queens.
Women of southeastern Queens say they won't feel completely safe until both suspects are under arrest. There's a $12,000 reward in this case.
