Police Make Arrests In Shooting Of 9-Year-Old Boy

Shamshawan Kelly Shot Outside His Flatbush Home While Playing On The Street

Community Says It Has Had It With Gun Violence

BROOKLYN (CBS) ― Two young men are now under arrest in the shooting of a 9-year-old Brooklyn boy.

The boy, who's still in critical condition, was caught in the crossfire of a gun battle outside his home on Monday.

Luis Gonzalez and Johnathan Frazier, both 18, are both charged with attempted murder.

Police say they tried to kill each other, but instead one of their bullets critically wounded Sham-Shawan Kelly.

"We hope that these results bring some small measure of comfort to Sham-Shawan's family in this horrific event," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

"Police say that Saturday, in the Albany houses, a 17-year-old named Gillespie tried to steal a gun at a block party in front of a crowd. They beat him up.

Police say Gillespie returned later for retaliation and shot at Frazier, but missed. Frazier then went out looking for retaliation of his own and found Gillespie walking with Gonzalez. Gonzalez, police say, fired at Frazier, who then fired back. The two managed to miss each other, but did hit young Sham-Shawan.

One of the suspects, Gonzalez; lives two floors above the 9-year-old boy. Racele Paul, putting up a get-well message, was saddened to learn could her neighbor was arrested:

"[I'm] shocked," Paul said. "I wouldn't think that he'd be involved in something like that."

Police say they knew who to arrest, because they got all of the leads from witnesses. There was no code of silence when it came to a 9-year-old boy.

Police have credited the community for coming forward with information that helped lead detectives to the suspects.
