The wicked winter storm that left thousands without power in Texas and Arkansas on Monday is now headed towards the Tri-state. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday evening to 6 a.m. on Wednesday for New York City and areas near the coast. Although Tuesday started out dry and calm, the winter weather will move into the region during the early evening hours.
According to CBS 2 HD's John Elliot, what will start off as light precipitation will turn to a messy snow/sleet mix causing headaches on the roads. But as warmer air moves over the area, precipitation should mix with and change to sleet by late in the evening. Then the real mess begins, with a change to freezing rain and sleet overnight.
"The true hazards will be for Wednesday morning commuters, as the precipitation that fell starting Tuesday evening will freeze over during the early morning hours," said Elliot.
The precipitation should change to all rain by sunrise Wednesday morning as warmer surface air begins to move in from the south. The precipitation will then change to all snow before ending Wednesday evening.
Total snow and sleet accumulation of up to an inch is expected Tuesday night, followed up to one-quarter of an inch of ice accumulation late in the evening.
A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.
"If you have to be on the roads late this evening or even worse, Wednesday morning, please be careful. Take extra time to get to your destination," advised Elliot.
The worst conditions will be inland, where heavier snow is expected, perhaps 2-4 inches, then a period of freezing rain which may accumulate to .25" by Wednesday morning. N & W of NYC will see significant winter weather.
Here is the detailed CBS 2 HD Weather Center's 48-Hour forecast, according to Meteorologist John Elliot and Weather Producer Justin Lewis:
Tuesday: Low pressure will approach from the south and begin to move precipitation into our area. Expect thickening clouds, cold temperatures and a chance of snow late in the afternoon.
Tuesday Evening: Low pressure will continue to track north and allow warmer air to filter in. Expect a change from snow to mix to rain from south to north (staying a mix N&W), steady or slightly rising temperatures through the overnight hours and breezy conditions.
Wednesday: Low pressure will continue to push north and draw in warmer air. Expect cloudy skies, rain through the day (freezing rain north and west), breezy conditions and slightly milder temperatures.
