Mix Of Rain, Sleet & Snow Making For Messy Commute

Winter Weather Advisory For Parts Of Tri-State

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Another round of wintry weather is hitting most of the Tri-State area and parts of upstate New York.

The mix of snow, sleet and rain, combined with the decreasing temperatures is causing hazardous conditions on the region's roads.

Commuters are advised to take it very slow when heading out on Wednesday morning, as the accumulated precipitation turns to black ice.

CBS 2's Jay Dow was live in Hackensack Wednesday morning, where residents were forced to break out the shovels for the first time this season. In the hardest hit areas, mostly in New Jersey, about 2 to 3 inches of snow were measured.

As the morning continues however, most of the precipitation is rain, which mixing with the snow is making for a messy commute to school and work.

Local, county and state crews are working hard to combat against the possibility of black ice on the regions highways.

Utility crews are also working to restore service to thousands of customers still without power because of last week's ice storm, which hit hardest in eastern New York and upstate New York.

One to 4 inches has fallen Wednesday morning in the Albany area, where National Grid reports some 11,000 homes and businesses without power. That's down from nearly 230,000 customers who lost power when the ice and snow storm hit eastern New York Thursday and Friday.

NYSEG still had outages in nearly three dozen communities in eastern New York. Updated outage figures from the utility weren't immediately available.

Scores of schools have delayed the start of classes Wednesday morning.

Forecasters say some areas could get up to 6 inches of snow.
