Good Products Can Save You Trips To Hair Salon
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ―
Does the cost of staying a blonde, brunette, or redhead have you seeing red? Let's face it, maintaining your hair color can cost a lot of green! But even in this tough economy, CBS station KYW-TV's Your Money Team finds there are ways to stretch your salon dollar.
At Salon Solaire in Worcester, Pennsylvania, owner Richard Kelly is seeing his loyal clients a bit less these days.
Kelly says, "Most of our clients have been on a four week schedule, now we're about six to eight week schedules."
But he says there are ways they can keep their color from fading between visits.
According to Kelly, "If you're not using the right products at home, the color is going to fade out and wash out much quicker."
Normal shampoos and conditioners can be too harsh.
"Someone with colored hair is going to want to make sure they stay with shampoos and conditioners that are solely designed to protect color," says Kelly.
Look for products labeled color protection, color longevity, anti-fade or color sealant. They're more expensive, but less costly than a dye job and some have color pigment in them.
By the way, don't use too much.
Kelly says, "All you need is the size of a pea. If you're using any more than that, you're throwing like 98 percent of it down the drain and wasting money there."
With summer right around the corner, take cover! The sun, water, and chlorine can do a real job on hair color. So use leave-in conditioners, sprays with sunscreen or better yet, wear a hat.
Kelly says, "Down the shore is the only time we are allowed to look horrible, so really take advantage of it, but make sure your head is covered because that is how you're going to protect from the sun."
And when you go back to the salon, if you can't afford a full head of highlights, Kelly says, "Instead of doing the full highlight, putting a few foils around the hairline or the part just to kind of camouflage it." It can cut the cost by more than half.
Some hair care experts recommend using cool water in the shower, because they say hot water is more likely to promote fading.
Also check with your colorist and find out what company made your color, you may want to use the same brand for your shampoo and conditioner.
While isn't essential, in most cases, manufacturers design their home hair care product line to compliment and maintain your color.
