CBS2 Classics: Pope John Paul II Dies

NEW YORK (CBS) ― One year ago, the world said goodbye to Pope John Paul II, a man loved and respected for both his philanthropy and advocacy for peace.

John Paul died April 2 at 9:37 p.m. in his apartment in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace, surrounded by Polish prelates and nuns and his doctors.

The cause of death was blood poisoning, as well as kidney and heart failure brought on by a urinary tract infection. The Pope had suffered for years from Parkinson's disease, and by the end of his life was unable to speak to the faithful, managing only to bless them weakly with his hand.

Locals mourned the loss, flocking to churches in record numbers to pray for and say goodbye to the head of the Roman Catholic church.
