Pope John Paul II served as the 264th Pope for nearly 27 years, from October 16, 1978 until his death on April 2, 2005. During his reign he made two pilgrimages to New York. The "People's Pope" touched the lives of millions across the world. Everywhere he traveled those in his presence felt blessed. The Melting Pot was no different. The moment he landed in New York on October 2, 1979 he achieved rock star status. From exchanging "shout outs" with Catholic high school students at Madison Square Garden in 1979 to braving the wind and rain in 1995 to inspire thousands with his gentle words of hope, Pope John Paul II blessed the Big Apple.WCBSTV.com takes a look back at both of his historic journeys.
