Hurricane Katrina: One Year Later

An Extensive CBS 2 News Video Archive

Slideshow: Hurricane Katrina Then And Now

(CBS) In the quiet of early morning, she sits alone surrounded by bare walls and donated furniture, reminders that the world she once cherished is gone. But her day begins with a prayer -- for what remains.

"Thank you, Lord ... for watching over me, my daughter, my mother, my sister during the night and keeping us safe," she says softly. Gaynell Bogan is grateful her family is together, and yet she desperately misses the life and home she had in New Orleans, both washed away by Hurricane Katrina.

One year after Katrina thundered across the Gulf Coast and into the history books, Gaynell and other survivors of the nation's costliest natural disaster are struggling to put their waterlogged world back together.

There are a million stories in the ravaged Gulf region. And in many ways, it is hard to believe that each and every one of those stories began only one year ago.

Katrina, obviously, was more than just a hurricane. It was a national tragedy. It was a catalyst to bring people together. And it was a story dominated by television. Cameras captured virtually every aspect of the disaster. The images of the storm and its aftermath chronicled the events for a stunned world and motivated people to help and to demand action. Here's an extensive archive of the powerful footage seen on CBS 2 News.
