Nov. 12, 2001: The Crash of Flight 587

Flight 587: Full Memorial Dedication Ceremony

NEW YORK (CBS) ― On November 12, 2001, American Airlines Flight 587 from JFK, which ws bound for the Dominican Republic, crashed in Belle Harbor, Queens, killing all 260 people on board. It was one of the deadliest crashes on American soil. Because the crash happened in New York, just two months after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, many people immediately suspected terrorism.

The National Transportation Safety Board released its accident report on October 26, 2004, stating the cause of the crash was the overuse of the rudder to counter wake turbulence. Fuel leaking from the engines as they split from the wings caused the smoke and fire.

The crash hit two close knit areas hard - the Dominican-American section of Washington Heights in Manhattan and Belle Harbor, in the Rockaways that many firefighters and other city workers call home. A community already devastated by the September 11th attacks two months earlier, when they lost a staggering number of people who called the area home.
