It became known, simply, as "the Howard Beach case."
On Dec. 20, 1986, a group of angry white people chased a group of African-Americans through the Queens neighborhood, forcing one into traffic where he was hit by a car and killed.
The death of Michael Griffith, 23, ignited racial tensions throughout New York City.
It resulted in a massive protest on Dec. 27, 1986, which was led in part by the Rev. Al Sharpton. It would bring him to prominence throughout New York City and, ultimately, across the country.
Eventually, nine people would be convicted of criminal charges related to Griffith's death. But the incident would never be forgotten.
