Consumer Report: Avoiding Runny Makeup For Summer

NEW YORK (CBS) ― You may look great before you leave the house in the morning, but it's just as important to avoid a makeup meltdown on sweltering summer days.

There are multiple products and tips that can keep you looking fresh all day long.

The heat and humidity can ruin your perfect look. But there are ways to beat the heat with a few small changes to your morning routine.

"The first rule for summer is to swap your heavy foundation for a more light, tinted moisturizer," April Franzino, a beauty writer for Good Housekeeping, said.

Franzino recommends products with an SPF factor as well as an addition to your morning preparation.

"It might sound counter-intuitive to add a step to your routine in the summer, but adding a face primer or an eye primer really does make a difference," Franzino said.

When you're hot and sweaty, a primer can keep your makeup where it belongs – on your face. To see which work the best, the Good Housekeeping Research Institute had volunteers put several to the test.

"We had them come back to the lab at the end of the day to analyze their faces," Charmaine Gillespie, the test's coordinator, said. "Smashbox was a winner among the face primers."

"I noticed with this product a real difference when the fact that at the end of the day my makeup was still on," Melissa Smario, a tester, said.

There are other tips to keeping a cool composure as well.

If you're sweaty and need a touch up, use non-powder blotting paper instead of applying more powder.

To set eye shadow, use a light layer of oil-free foundation across your lid first.

It also could help to cool down your cosmetics by storing them in the fridge. From lipstick to eye pencils, the cold keeps your makeup fresher, and helps reduce smudging and faded colors.
