Money Saver: Get Jump On Back-To-School Sales

CBS 2 HD Has All The Deals Fit For Print; Great Bargains Can Be Found If You Act Now And Do Some Research

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Even though it seems summer may hardly have begun retailers are hoping to lure kids and their parents in for back-to-school shopping.

And as CBS 2 HD found out, it may pay to start early.

The signs are already up. Back-to-school bargains to keep your kids cool in school and mom and dad happy with the checkbook have arrived. This is the second biggest shopping season after the holiday season, but savvy shoppers will start earlier and take their time in order to save.

"What you do have to do, though, is be willing to do a little bit more work, a little bit more research, shop around, look for deals," said Nicole Young, style expert for off-price retailers.

Young, a stylist to the stars and designer herself, says visit off-price retailers for trendy items. She found a floral print mini for just $15, a breezy animal print scarf for $12 and white jeans that will be worn again and again by your student for just $38.

One of the best bargain-hunting strategies is doing a lot of leg work. Gap and Banana Republic are successfully boosting profits by doing micro-sales, or store-by-store discounts. Buyers benefit by knowing clothes may be cheaper at a store just a few blocks away, so it pays to keep checking prices.

Staples is hoping to take a big bite out of the $54 billion spent during the back-to-school season by offering school supplies sales with $1 promotions, penny sales and even for free.

"Buy any backpack then you have the full money paid back to you as long as you are a Staples rewards member," Staples general manager Amar Hamid said.

Other retailers offering deals include Apple stores selling a MacBooks to students and giving away a free iPod Touch. J.C. Penney has up to 50 percent off juniors and dorm life items. And at Target you can save on dorm bedding.

Kmart also has deals on laptop computers. Office Depot is giving away free stuff with minimum purchases. Textbooks at betterworld.com are going for up to 80 percent off bookstore prices.

These are all deals you don't need a degree in advanced calculus to appreciate.
