Consumer Watch: Find Work In A Struggling Economy

Many Companies Still Hiring, Even During Fiscal Crisis

NEW YORK (CBS) ― If you're looking for a job, experts say that even in this economy, you can find one.

While the most recent unemployment numbers are grim, companies are still hiring.

From administrative assistants to IT associates, hundreds of positions are available in the area – if you know where to look.

"There are always industries hiring," recruiter Cari Browne says. "Healthcare, info-tech, private technology, private technology for their portfolio companies."

Browne, of the executive recruiting firm Korn/Ferry International, says it's a good time to re-evaluate your options.

"Oftentimes, a layoff or firing gives a person the opportunity to think of a whole new industry and new functions they want to go into," Browne says.

Despite daily headlines about the layoffs of thousands of workers, New York area firms are hiring new workers. But how do you find the companies that are looking?

First up: the internet search engine. Google has 43 positions now open in their New York office, including jobs in the software, engineering, and advertising sales departments.

Accounting firm KPMG is looking to fill a wide range of positions, from administrative assistants to IT associates to tax managers, at their Manhattan and Montvale, NJ locations.

Accenture, the consulting and technology firm, needs finance, sales and IT people to fill hundreds of positions available in several New York, New Jersey and Connecticut offices.

If you're a recent college graduate, keep your eyes on PricewaterhouseCoopers. The world's largest professionals service firm plans to hire 3,000 undergraduates this year.

So how do you set yourself apart to land one of these jobs?

"You'll stand out because you made effort, you know what the company is doing, and you know who your interviewer is," Browne says.

Also currently hiring in the five boroughs, the State of New York has positions in every area from children and family services to taxation and finance open.
