NYC Churches Offer Mortgage Crisis Counseling

NEW YORK (AP) ― Nonprofit agencies will offer workshops after church services in parts of Brooklyn and Queens hit hardest by the subprime mortgage crisis.

Roman Catholic Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio and Sen. Charles Schumer announced the grassroots effort on Wednesday.

They said nearly a dozen workshops will be held to teach parishioners how to spot predatory lenders, find the best loans and arrange refinancing.

Schumer says Brooklyn and Queens have some of the highest foreclosure rates in the country.

The workshops will be conducted in English, Spanish and Creole, depending on the languages spoken in the communities.
