Consumer: Stylish, Affordable Winter Coat Options
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
The nip in the air means it's time to start thinking about wearing a winter coat.
To ease your way into the cold weather season, we have a look at the hottest styles at some pretty cool prices.
Maybe it's the heat from the bright colors, or the classic, cool styles, but buyers are warming up to the notion of shopping for winter coats.
"We're seeing a wide variety of trends in coats, everything from a very edgy look to a very feminine look," Dawn Yanek, of Life & Style Weekly, says. "So there is really something out there for every personality type, every fashion type, and at really affordable price points.
"One of the big trends we're seeing for the fall is a leather motorcycle jacket," Yanek says.
The iconic look has been undated by pairing it with a more feminine blouse, for an unexpected contrast.
"This is a faux leather jacket from JC Penney, and it's only $72," Yanek says.
Red was a hot color for the fall, and that trend continues into winter. Big buttons, a defined waist, and a rich hue can give classically styled coats a more contemporary look.
"It's $250, so it's a bit of a splurge item, but this is an investment piece, and this is something you will wear for years to come," Yanek says.
Hats and other accessories are also a big fashion item. Look for beaded embellishments on knitted caps and classically styled fedoras and when winter fully sets in, a faux fur will keep you warm and stylish.
"Scarves are a really important accessory they can, yes, change the look of your outerwear, but they can also change your look period," Yanek says.
A bright pink scarf can give a classic pea coat a trendy new look.
Look for pea coats with detailed tailoring for a more distinctive shape.
"Pea coats are a truly timeless trend," Yanek says. "They're in this season, they never went out of style, and I can guarantee you they'll be in next season as well."
Another timeless trend that gets a seasonal makeover is a cropped jacket with military-inspired details. It can be a great transitional piece, and can often be found at a great value.
"When it comes to outerwear, yes, it's about fashion, but it's also about necessity," Yanek says. "You want to stay warm in these cold winter months, so this is something that people can get a lot bang for their buck from."
There are already lots of sales on coats and the season has barely started, so be sure to shop around.
