CBS 2 HD Presents: Eye Creams That Mask Aging
Wrinkles, Crow's Feet Have To Start Somewhere, But Certain Products Can Restore Your Youthful Appearance
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Gold and silk, caffeine and even caviar they're all the latest ingredients to lure you in to buy a new eye cream promising fewer lines, dark circles and puffiness.
Now, CBS 2 HD goes beyond the claims to find out what really works.
Billions of dollars are spent every year by women looking for the fountain of youth for their faces. And the area that gets the most attention? The eyes.
"It's one of the first places you show wrinkles. And a lot of people start seeing the first signs of aging right around your eyes," said Eleanor Langston, beauty editor at Self magazine.
LangstonĀ said technology is the key to fighting the notorious trio of trouble for the eyes -- wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness.
"For puffiness, the best ingredient to use is caffeine," Langston said.
Garnier and the Detox Eye Roller both deliver that shot of wake-up with the hottest trend, the roller ball.
"It's going to massage your under eye area, makes them less puffy. Deflates them a bit and also it drives the ingredients into the skin," Langston said.
To banish dark circles, try the Shiseido Pure Retinol Eye Mask, packed with ingredients to guarantee an all-over pick me up.
"Which dermatologists say really increases the cell, cellular turn over, so it's going to lessen your fine lines, wrinkles and crow's feet," Langston said.
While some department stores will charge hundreds for special serums, Olay, Aveeno and L'Oreal all earn high marks for their great ingredients -- at drugstore prices of about $20.
"You do not have to spend big money to get big results with eye creams," Langston said.
The Pearl ice mask lets you massage cool beads on top of the eyes, no creams needed. And for the best drug store product performance, the Good Housekeeping Research Institute used 20 volunteers age 35 to 70 to test the latest wrinkle fighter, measuring exact results.
While those results only lasted a few days once testers stopped using it University Medical Face Lift WrinkleFree Eyes at just $30, was a winner.
"We found that there was at least a slight improvement in the tightening, lifted look of the eye area. The second most common result was softening of the under eye lines," Good Housekeeping product analyst Mary McConnell said.
Added tester Sandra Brookhouse: "I've used it before, and I really could see a difference."
Without a big difference in her bank account.
