There's a gas station on Long Island that has a lot of drivers really excited. But there's a catch: You better go there soon.
CBS
What a deal CBS 2 HD found Friday at a Getty station on the corner of Central Avenue and Grove in Cedarhurst. Well, sort of.
It seems that technology can't keep up with the rising price of gas. Older pumps aren't able to charge more than $3.99 per gallon even if owners want to. It's a design flaw that you can take advantage of as you make your way out of town this Memorial Day weekend.
"I was shocked to see
not see a 4," driver Sharon Zaslowski said, reflecting on the double-take he took as he pulled into the station. "I'm really happy."
And there's more believe it or not, the station owner told CBS 2 HD that there are thousands of pumps unable to crack $4.00 a gallon.
"From what I understand, there's 17,000 pumps stuck at $3.99.9," Jim Baker said.
Robert Sinclair of AAA echoed a rallying cry for everyone with a car on Long Island.
"Go buy it now because without a doubt they'll be changing those pumps soon," Sinclair said.
For everybody else, the open road beckoned on Friday as people did their best to get out of the area. The high prices at the pump have ruined some people's holiday plans. Many have the time off, but can't afford to get away.
"They're insane," driver Gail Lustig said of the prices.
"They keep going up
and up and up and up," said 9-year-old Marni Gottesman of Lawrence.
"It's unbelievable," added another driver.
Sinclair said for the first time in a while, the prices are really prohibitive.
"People are definitely suffering," Sinclair said. "We're seeing people traveling less and if they're traveling they're going shorter distances."
To the drivers who are lucky enough to get away, Sinclair offers the following gas-saving tips:
* Proper Tire Pressure
* All Spark Plugs Working
* Clean Air Filter
* Drive between 45-60mph
* Remove Excess Weight
He also said to make sure to gas up with regular, because, after all, who really needs premium?
"They think they're giving their car a treat like a dog, but that's not the case -- 95 percent of the vehicles on the road can burn regular."
