Harry Connick Jr.: Talented And Much In Demand

Man With The Silky Voice Set To Make Theatrical Debut

NEW YORK (CBS) ― After selling 20 million albums, three-time Grammy Award winner Harry Connick Jr. has taken on a new challenge.

Connick, a proud native of New Orleans, is set to make his theatrical debut as Sid Sorokin in "The Pajama Game," starting Thursday at the American Airlines Theatre on West 42nd Street.

With a score featuring standards like "Hey There," "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway," The Pajama Game is set in the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory during a strenuous labor negotiation. At the musical's center is the simmering attraction between a handsome new manager and a lovely union representative. But their budding romance is threatened by the impending strike.

In addition to his musical prowess, Connick has received multiple honors, including nominations for Emmy and Tony Awards.

Making his first jazz album at age 10, Connick emerged as one of the greats of his time. After moving to New York at 18, he made a self-titled album for Columbia Records. Two years later, his singing was a feature on the multi-platinum album for the movie "When Harry Met Sally."

Throughout the 1990s, Connick's work ranged from vocal music to original instrumental music. According to sony.com, his albums featured original instrumental and vocal music ("Lofty's Roach Soufflé" and "We Are in Love," respectively), explored funk ("She" and "Star Turtle") and romantic balladry ("To See You"), and then pulled all of these strands together in the decade-ending tour de force "Come by Me."

Recently, Connick won a Grammy for his song "Songs I Heard," and his recent jazz quartet triumph "Other Hours."

Connick the actor has made a major impact in theatrical films and on television. His Hollywood credits include "Memphis Belle," "Hope Floats" and "Independence Day," while his small-screen triumphs include the ABC production of "South Pacific" and his recurring role on NBC's "Will & Grace."
