Katie Couric Wraps Up Tour In San Francisco

CBS News Interactive: About Katie Couric

(CBS) New CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric ended her nationwide tour in San Francisco Monday, greeting viewers and promoting cancer awareness.

Couric promoted cancer screening and participated in charity events in each of the six cities she visited during her week-long tour dubbed "Eye on America."

In the Bay Area, Couric delivered a noon-hour Commonwealth Club keynote address entitled "The Ounce that Saves a Life." The fundraising event benefited the American Cancer Society and the Northern California Cancer Center.

Mayor Gavin Newsom proclaimed Monday "Katie Couric Day" in San Francisco, welcoming her to the city in introductory remarks prior to her speech.

Couric talked about a subject that is very close to her heart, the awareness of cancer screening. Couric lost her husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer in 1998.

"Any effort to encourage people to get screened is something I really support," Couric said. "The thing about colon cancer and survivors know, you've got to be screened when you're feeling well. There are no symptoms until you have full-blown cancer. "

Couric was also particiapting in a Town Hall Meeting later Monday afternoon to hear about the topics that matter most to Bay Area residents and hear what they'd like to see covered, both locally and nationally.

Couric said she appreciates people taking time out of their lives to talk informally with her about how they get their news as well as what issues are the most important to them.

"People are being really nice to spend some time with me, talking with me about the issues they care about, and about how they get their news," she said.

"Some things we've heard from people is they want more perspective, they want more news stories in greater context," Couric explained. "I got the distinct sense they want us to go a little deeper."

In addition to San Francisco, Couric visited Tampa, Denver, Dallas, Minneapolis and San Diego.

Couric, 49, begins her new role as CBS Evening News Anchor and Managing Editor on Sept. 5, 2006. She will be the first female solo anchor of a network weekday newscast, following such esteemed journalists as Douglas Edwards, Walter Cronkite and most recently, Dan Rather and Bob Schieffer. She will also be a 60 Minutes correspondent and will anchor CBS News primetime specials.
