Women Of The Sopranos Take Center Stage
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
James Gandolfini may be Tony Soprano, but few fans of the show would argue the much of the pulse of the show comes from the women that surround him.
Yes, Tony has a few, well, work pressures, but nothing like what he feels at home with wife Carmela, played by Edie Falco. He goes and talks though his issues with his therapist, Dr. Melfi, played by Lorraine Bracco. Daughter Meadow has hardly made things easy for Tony, and fans of the show have gotten to see Jamie-Lynn DiScala grow up in the show's five seasons. Aida Turturro plays Tony's sister Janice, the dictionary definition of a tumultuous sibling relationship.
According to HBO's Web site, Falco became the only actress to ever receive the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Dramatic Series, the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Dramatic Television Series, and the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama, all in the same year. She has since been nominated in every year she was eligible for both an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
As for Bacco, the site says it's her concise, understated portrayal that has earned her multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations for Best Actress in a TV Drama. She was once nominated for an Oscar for her role in the movie "Goodfellas."
DiScala's performance on the show earned her the 1999 and 2000 Hollywood Reporter Young Star Award for Best Actress in a Dramatic Series, as well as two ALMA Award nominations for Best Actress in a Drama Series (2001 & 2002.)
Turturro was nominated for an Emmy this year for her portrayal of Janice Soprano, and has a number of film credits to her name, including Martin Scorsese's "Bringing Out The Dead."
All four sat down and talked about the Sopranos and much more at the New York Times Arts & Leisure weekend.
