Talking Back: What People Are Saying About Imus

Tell Us Your Thoughts: Do You Buy His Explanation?

Radio personality Don Imus again defended his comments about "Pac Man" Jones' legal troubles Tuesday morning, saying on his radio program that he was making the sarcastic point that Jones had been arrested numerous times because he was black.

We prompted CBS 2 viewers to write in with their thoughts on the controversy and many seem to have strong feelings on both sides. Here are some of the responses we've received to the question, "Do you buy Don Imus' explanation?"

No I do not. i think Mr. Imus is out of touch with the black community, and if he wants my advice he should stop commenting on race relations altogether.
--James Horan, Ocean, N.J.

Yes. I am not particularly fond of Imus and I think he is right on the money here. Blacks are arrested more often then they ought to be.
--Alice Jones, Wallingford, Conn.

Imus put his foot in his mouth once again, and now he's trying to undo the damage with a lame excuse. No, I don't buy his explanation. To me, it was a racist remark that he let slip.
--Doris K., Monroe, N.Y.

I don't buy it at all! Don Imus needs Jesus! He also needs to get an understanding of what 'racist' remarks are. For some reason, I do not believe HE is racist, but he is passing on ideas he has learned early on. Yes he should be more responsible, but 'What's in you, will eventually come out!' I'm praying for his DELIVERANCE!!
--GSW, Newark, N.J.

Yes, of course I do. Here we go again, why doesn't anyone of his so-called friends come to his defense. He meant to point out a problem with athletes and celebrities. But there is an elephant in the room being ignored. How about addressing the fact that our prisons are the homes of way to many young black men, why?
--Carol, Cape Canaveral, Fla.

This is getting ridiculous. I am a black man and I'm tired of my race and every other race concerning name calling. It's a shame when we as black men make racial remarks at one another, calling each other the "N" word, but when someone says a remark of a black man we become too sensitive. We must take a real serious look at ourselves and grow up. This is why we will never, and I mean never have peace among the races -- because of this useless attention. Why don't we all use our strengths to help stop police profiling and white injustices? Also whites are victims as well as blacks, regardless of statistics. Grow up human race!
--Thomas, New York City

Yes, I accept his explanation. For Pete's sake, every remark someone makes is not a racial slur. We are going too far in policing the media for racial slurs. Enough already.
--Teri Rosen, Verona, N.J.

In the conversation, it's obvious that Imus was defending Adam Jones. Taken in context, the comment criticized the injustice of racial bias within America. The public's hasty outcry exemplifies the kind of baseless, unjust action Imus was in fact criticizing.
--Raj Hirani, Piscataway, N.J.

I perfectly understand Don Imus's explanation. Don was simply sticking up for an African American citizen. Don sees what is going on all across America within the African American community. Thank you very much Don Imus.
--Marjorie Merritt, Bridgeport, Conn.

If his short term memory is beginning to fail than perhaps the comments could be made tolerable. Otherwise he is just plain stupid, should know better, and take some heat for his remarks. Does he really think that all he has to do is 'spin the words' and try to make us believe we did not hear what was said.
--Walt, N.Y.

A Shock Jock said something shocking? How Shocking! Just change the station or turn it off. If no one listens he is out of a job. The attention feeds the tension. If you are the type that listens to his rhetoric nothing said in the news will change your views.
--Ed, Sunnyside, N.Y.
