Host Drew Carey makes his debut today as the new host of "The Price Is Right."
Today marks the show's 36th season premiere on CBS. Carey was recently named host of television's long-running game show, succeeding former host Bob Barker, who retired in June after 35 years on the show.
The new season will start out with some exciting wins, as several contestants make some lucky spins on the big Wheel. Others have the chance to win some of the most expensive cars ever given away on the show, as well as trips to exotic locations and more amazing prizes. In addition, the familiar set has been refreshed to give it an updated look while keeping the recognizable "The Price Is Right" theme and appearance.
While Barker typically took questions from the crowd during commercials, Carey switches it up, interviewing the audience to learn where they've come from and what they do for work. "It's fascinating to me," says the self-described "people watcher."
But Carey closes the show each day the same way Barker did: "Have your pets spayed or neutered."
"It's a tradition," he explains. "It's been here all this time. I don't want to get rid of that."
The new host has added his own end-of-show touch, though. Once the cameras have stopped rolling, Carey urges the crowd to "keep hoping for the best for others" as they do when they cheer for their fellow audience members who end up as contestants on the show.
"It's like my Zen of 'Price Is Right,"' he says.
The 83-year-old Barker, who hosted "The Price Is Right" for 35 years and "Truth or Consequences" for 19 years before that, says he plans to tune in to see Carey's take on "Price."
"Of course I'm going to watch. I'm curious just like everybody else," Barker says, adding, "I hope he gets a huge rating."
Carey, a stand-up comic turned actor and producer who is best known for having two hit shows simultaneously "The Drew Carey Show" and "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" is also the host of the "Power Of 10," a high-stakes, prime-time game show where contestants compete for the chance to win $10 million. He was also a producer and host of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" which continues to air in syndication.
"The Price Is Right" won the 2007 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Show, and is television's longest-running game show.
