Nun's Documentary Challenges Church Dogma

"In Good Conscience" Tackles Gay/Lesbian Issues

NEW YORK (CBS) ― If you haven't heard of the film "In Good Conscience," you probably will soon.

Since opening around the world, the feature documentary, formally titled "In Good Conscience: Sister Jeannine Gramick's Journey of Faith," has earned praise at film festivals in San Diego, Sydney, Philadelphia and Michigan, among others.

There is even some scuttlebutt now of a possible Academy Award nomination.

The story tells Gramick's campaign against Pope Benedict XVI's strict adherence to Catholic Church dogma about against gays and lesbians. The Pope is not seen in the film but he is a central character. New York filmmaker Barbara Rick spent five years following the Maryland nun as she battled the church over the role of gays and lesbians. The film has been highlighted in Variety, TimeOut NY and by Oscar winner Barbara Kopple.
