It is estimated that a person dies by suicide every 16 minutes, with an attempt made every minute and over 33,000 people die each year in the United States to suicide. In order to stop these numbers from rising The Out of the Darkness Community walk ( a 3-5 mile fundraising way to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) will take place on November 1st 2009. Funds that are raised from the NYC Community walks will go towards the local NYC depression and suicide educational programs supporting programs for those who have lost someone to suicide while promote research needed to help those who suffer from major depression mental illnesses and mood disorders. Reporter Hazel Sanchez will be honored at the 6th Filipina Leadership Summit, as one of the 100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the U.S. Her acknowledgement will come during the Gala Awards portion of the summit on November 1st at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, California. Sanchez is being recognized for her outstanding achievements as a Filipina woman and as a successful career person. Her accomplishments during her career include earning a Midwest Emmy award, a CINE Golden Eagle award, and an award from the Wisconsin Broadcast Association. In addition to her numerous awards she has been actively involved in writing, reporting and being an anchor for newscasts, as well as has hosted several award-winning documentaries. Sanchez is currently part of the CBS 2 news team, and has been a general assignment reporter for the station for the past nine years. The Filipina Leadership Summit offers the opportunity for Filipina professionals to gather together and discuss the latest developments for multicultural professionals in the U.S. workplace, so they may make connections to advance their careers. The Recognition Awards Gala will be an evening with dinner, cocktails, a notable guest speaker, and special honorees. Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology has just launched "Give Back Sunday", a nonprofit program created to provide community members with diagnostic imaging tests needed, but cannot afford. Zwager-Pesiri acknowledges that in these hard economic times many American's have lost their jobs and no longer have health insurance. In response to these trying times the radiology clinic designed "Give Back Sundays" so one Sunday each month individuals can come in and receive radiological services at no charge. Volunteers including medical professionals, radiologists, nurses, technologists, and receptionists donate their time, and offer their expertise to uninsured Long Island residence for no charge. Since April Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology has provided over 1,800 free diagnostic imaging tests including MRIs, CTs, Digital Mammograms, and

Long Islanders have something exciting to look forward to this holiday season, the first annual "Turkey & Trimmings" Drive to benefit Island Harvest. On Friday, November 13, 2009 the residence of Long Island will be able to help the other 25,000 Long Island Families in need this Thanksgiving, by donating turkeys and holiday dry goods during the "Turkey & Trimmings" drive. The drive will be hosted by the Bethpage Federal Credit Union who will collect food goods for the Island Harvest- a hunger relief organization which supplies Long Island's community with food support. The food drive will include family fun activities, a line up of trucks, tents and boxes for storing the donations. A special guest appearance from former Knicks star John Starks, will offer fans a chance to meet the star and Starks will be offering assistance with the drive. Families are invited to explore the Kandinsky exhibition, a full-scale retrospective of the visionary artist, while engaging in a day of family-friendly programs, including art-making activities, performances and story telling. The Kandinsky exhibition features an international collaboration, bringing together more than 100 colorful, rarely traveled works, and historic opportunity for reexamination of Kandinsky's visionary legacy. Anchors Chris Wragge and Rob Morrison, and weathercaster Lonnie Quinn will be serving meals to the Homeless at the Great Thanksgiving Banquet on Monday, November 23, 2009 at 90 Lafayette St in New York. The banquet is hosted by the NYC Rescue Mission, whose famous statement is, "Food for hungry, rest for weary". The Thanksgiving feast will consist of a three-course turkey dinner, elegant table settings, and Gospel entertainment. There will be approximately 1,000 meals served over the course of the day, and guests will include women and children living in city shelters, individuals living on the streets or in parks, homeless veterans, and others with special needs. The New York City Rescue Mission was the first homeless shelter in NYC, and for over 135 years has been helping to alleviate homelessness, hunger, and addiction by providing everyday necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, counseling and spiritual help.
