Thousands upon thousands of Jets fans were tickled green with excitement on Thursday when it was announced that the team had traded for future Hall of Famer Brett Favre.
But how happy was Broadway Brett?
According to a Wisconsin newspaper, it was a melancholy mood on the Favre family's flight from Green Bay to their home in Mississippi on Wednesday when the storied quarterback realized he'd likely become a New York Jet.
Grant Goetsch, the pilot on the private jet,
told the Watertown Daily Times that Favre "didn't want to really go to the Jets.
"It was a somber trip. There's no better words to describe it," he said.
It's certainly possible that Favre's falling out with the Packers could have led the team's top brass to send him somewhere they knew wasn't atop his wish list.
Favre admitted during his news conference on Thursday that he had initially wanted to go to a team within the NFC North, the same division as the Packers.
"To a certain degree, I don't know what I'm getting into," he'd also confessed.
Still, Favre was welcomed into New York City on Friday morning by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who gave Favre an assortment of gifts including a MetroCard with $4 worth of fare, a copy of his book, a Broadway street sign, and a keychain he hoped would one day hold a key to the city after the Jets win the Super Bowl.
Thanking everyone for the attention he'd been getting since his arrival, Favre said he was excited about the challenge of learning a new system, though at times he showed the tension of a rookie in his first news conference as he spoke to the room of reporters at City Hall.
"I wish the Packers well and I certainly wish the Jets well, and I hope that I can bring as much excitement throughout the year as we've had in the last two or three days," he said. "As hard as I worked in Green Bay and as much as I prepared and got myself ready, it's different. This is much different and it's very exciting."
Whether or not Favre is truly happy to be a Jet, what can't be argued is his love for football and his passion for winning and being the best. Fans who may question his desire to be in New York, shouldn't at least not yet question his ability to take the Jets all the way.
