Costly Classic: NYC Restaurant Offers $81 Burger
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
If you're not a fan of the cheap dollar-menu burgers at your local chain burger joints, Old Homestead Steakhouse in Manhattan has the beef for you.
The west side restaurant Tuesday turned the favorite American classic into a Japanese luxury when it unveiled its 18-ounce $81 burger, made from the highest grade of Japanese Kobe Wagyu.
Each burger is made with 14 ounces of the high-end Japanese beef and 4 ounces of barely-seared sirloin Wagyu medallion tucked inside. It comes with Executive Chef Oscar Martinez's own sake onion ketchup, miso and ginger aioli, and a side of tater tots.
Greg Sherry, co-owner of Old Homestead, admits he's eaten about 30 of the lavish burgers himself, and expects customers to love every bite of the pricey plate as much as he does.
"I think people are gonna say, 'Wow what a different taste, what a unique taste,'" he tells wcbstv.com.
Sherry, who owns the restaurant with his brother Marc, came up with the idea for the burger last year when they decided they wanted to create "the most decadent food item of 2008." While Marc came up with the idea for the Kobe burger, Greg says he decided adding the s medallion into the center would take it to perfection.
"The tenderness and the flavor just blew everybody away," he says.
Because of the exclusivity of the burger, it won't be just a regular item on the menu. Sherry expects word-of-mouth among the city's food connoisseurs will help boost sales.
"It's the finest of the finest," he says. "People that know food will want to try it and will enjoy and I don't think there's much of a resistance to a marketplace that likes fine dining."
Old Homestead Steakhouse is located on Ninth Ave. between 14th and 15th streets.
