NYC Man Says He Found 7-Inch Knife In Subway Bun

Suing The Sandwich Chain For $1 Million

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A Queens man is suing his local Subway restaurant after he made a frightening discovery that gives new meaning to his former favorite, the Italian cold-cut trio: a knife baked right into the bun.

John Agnesini, 27, tells CBS 2 that he was shocked to find the surprise ingredient, and a large one at that, in his sandwich.

"I happen to glance down and I see this sticking out of the other half. I turn it around and there's this knife adhered to the bread," he says.

The incident happened two weeks ago, according to Agnesini, the design director at HX magazine. He says he was sitting at his computer doing work and not looking at what he was about to put into his mouth.

"I can't believe this is in there stuck to the bread like this," he says, showing CBS 2 the knife. "It was melted in there the whole time."

Agnesini said he didn't bite into the knife's blade and wasn't cut, but a few hours later, he said he felt sick to his stomach and went to his doctor.

"It did appear that the plastic did melt and the knife was filthy too because I had symptoms and had eaten the bread, the doctor said a slight case of food poisoning," he says.

And Agensini says what shocked him most was the attitude at Subway when he told them about the knife. He says they were dismissive and not the least bit concerned.

"They didn't apologize, they didn't say, 'Oh my god, bring it back.' Nothing," he says.

Because Agnesini is suing Subway for $1 million, the sandwich chain says they can't comment on the specifics except to say: "At Subway restaurants, we take food safety and customer comments very seriously."

Agnesini can't seem to figure out how anyone could miss the knife.

"The sandwich slid down the counter with four other people handling it. Nobody noticed? It's a seven inch knife in a six-inch sub. How do you not see it?" he says.

Agnesini says he's just grateful a child didn't get served the lethal sub first and suffer really serious injuries.
