A massive Nestle cookie dough recall is underway Friday.
An investigation by the Food and Drug Administration found the dough may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria that could make you, and your family, very sick.
At D'Agostino grocery on Manhattan's West Side, Nestle Toll House cookie dough was yanked off store shelves Friday.
Consumers are being told to not eat or handle any of the refrigerated dough products, because they could be contaminated with potentially deadly E. coli bacteria.
The FDA is now investigating the products after 66 people across 28 states became sick from eating the raw dough, and 25 of them had to be hospitalized. However, no one has died.
"Many cases of E. coli cause no disease whatsoever," Dr. Steven Lamm, internist at NYU Medical Center, says. "But there are a few strains of E. coli that produce a toxin, and this particular strain of E. coli can make you very sick."
At the Nestle plant in Danville, Virginia where the cookie dough in question is manufactured, 270 of the plant's 550 workers have reportedly been temporarily laid off as the production line is shutdown.
In a statement, Nestle defends its products, saying: "While the E. coli strain implicated in this investigation has not been detected in our product, the health and safety of our consumers is paramount, so we are initiating this voluntary recall."
Nestle says the refrigerated dough is never supposed to be eaten raw, a warning that is found in small print on the packaging in English and Spanish.
The FDA says that if you have any of the cookie dough products at home, throw them away. If you want to be reimbursed, Nestle says to take the items back to the store for a full refund.
